After the Lies - Mandessa Selby

The US Government promises the Black Seminoles if they serve as scouts for the army. Callie decides she has to join, so she can get land for her family and tribe. So disguises herself as a boy. But, she never expected to find love.

Lucien is the son of a wealthy plantation owner and his mistress. Lucien's secret is that he is part black, a secret he must keep or he'll lose everything he's worked for. And he doesn't know what it is, but there is just something about this new scout named Cal.

I found this book a few years ago really cheap. It sounded interesting so I decided to take a chance and buy it. It does have spelling and grammar errors. The story, character development, just the book overall definitely needs polishing.

With that said, there is a lot of potential. The story was good and interesting, but just needed some work. I liked the characters, but they needed some more development. And although I did like the characters, I had some annoyances with them. Callie seemed to have a switching personality. And Luc, while not a bad, he did some things that had me thinking he was a pervert. I really liked Esme, though.

I did like the book, but it could have been so much better if more time had been taken with it. The author definitely has talent, her own voice, and style. Those are very good things. Her story just needed a lot of work.

It was still a good read, though and I don't regret reading it.
