Lakota Woman - Richard Erdoes, Mary Crow Dog

Mary Crow Dog (AKA Mary Brave Bird) is a Lakota woman who grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota and is known for her time with the American Indian Movement.

I watched the made-for-TV movie starring Irene Bedard this book was based on. I really liked the movie and looked forward to finally reading this book. Let me just say I am Native (Cherokee, but not full-blood), but I was not raised on a Reservation. I do, however, know the history of my tribe and Native peoples in general. It will never be right what happened to the Cherokee and all Indian tribes.

I really wanted to like this book. I wanted to like Mary. I understand she's angry, but it was too much. And there was just too many racial slurs throughout the book directed at white people as well as not saying the nicest things about mixed Natives or ones who weren't and didn't think like her.

While I did learn some history, I didn't really like the book.
